NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Matt Melton '14 won the 600-meter run to highlight the Amherst men's indoor track & field team's season opener on Saturday at the Winter Classic hosted by Smith College.
The Jeffs grabbed a total of 12 top-five finishes in Saturday's 15 event meet. Leading the way was Melton in the 600m run in which Amherst took four of the top-five spots. Melton paced the way with a mark of 1:23.91 followed by Brent Harrison '16 in second, crossing the finish line in 1:25.93. Nick Codola '15 and Alex Durkee '15 took fourth (1:23.25) and fifth (1:26.24), respectively.
Khalil Fleming '16 had a strong day in both sprints and jumps. The sophomore took fifth in the 60m dash with a mark of 7.34 seconds and also grabbed third in the triple jump with a distance of 11.87m. Amherst rounded out the top-five with a fourth place finish from Mark Cort '15 (11.87m) and a fifth place mark from Stephen Hetterich '15 (11.66m).
In other track performances, Jamie Sandel '17 took fifth in the 400m dash in his first career meet, crossing the finish line in 53.75 seconds.
Lucas Lebovitz '15 finished fourth in the 800m run, placing with a time of 2:03.06, while Kevin Connors '17 and Ben Fiedler '17 took fourth and fifth in the one mile run, respectively, to round of the top performances for the Jeffs. Connors completed the event in 4:30.81 and Fiedler finished right after in 4:30.90.
The Jeffs have a month break before returning to action on Jan. 18 at the Tufts Stampede hosted by Tufts University.
