HADLEY, Mass. – Five members of the Amherst outdoor track and field programs were named All-Conference selections and Karen Blake '17 took home the women's Rookie Most Outstanding Performer award at the 2014 NESCAC Championships, as announced by the league office.
The top three finishers in each event during the championship receive All-Conference recognition. Juniors Mark Cort and KC Fussell were honored on the men's side and Naomi Bates '14, Blake and Kiana Herold '17 represented the women's team.
Blake continued her impressive first-year campaign and ran the 100 meter dash preliminaries in 12.13 seconds to enter the finals as the favorite, as she came away victorious. With a time of 12.30 seconds, Blake paced the field to claim first-place. She currently holds the women's outdoor program record (12.01) and three of the top-five finishes in the 100 meter dash in school history.
All-American Bates and first-year Herold won their respective events to earn All-Conference laurels as well. Bates, the 2014 national indoor long jump champion, claimed first with a leap of 5.69 meters and now owns Amherst's top-three long jump marks of all-time. The senior also earned all-league honors in the 200 meter dash with a second-place finish in 25.45 seconds.
Herold added to her impressive first season in Purple & White when she won the high jump. She finished ahead of the field with a leap of 1.62 meters and surpassed the program's freshman record she set earlier this season (1.61m).
For the men, Cort and Fussell finished within the top-three in their respective events to earn a spot on the All-Conference team. Cort highlighted the day for the Jeffs at the conference championship in field events and finished as the runner-up in the long jump with a leap of 6.63 meters.
Fussell turned in the top track finish for the Amherst men. The junior Massachusetts native finished third overall in the 10,000 meter run and crossed the finish line in 31:05.56, clocking in less than a second off the first-place time (30:15.63).
Both teams return to action on May 2-3 at the DIII New Englands hosted by Springfield College.
