CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Matt Melton '14 won the 400 meter dash to lead the Amherst men's indoor track & field team at the 2014 New England Division III Men's Indoor Championships, hosted by MIT.
Amherst finished sixth overall out of 26 teams. MIT won the meet followed by Tufts in second, Bates third, Williams fourth and Southern Maine fifth to round out the top five.
Melton continued his stellar 2014 season by claiming the event in 49.23, edging Tyler Singer-Clark from MIT who finished second in 49.81. Amherst grabbed another win on the day in the 4,000 meter distance medley relay, crossing the finish line first with a mark of 10:25.34.
The Jeffs received strong performances in the 1 mile run from juniors Greg Turissini and Romey Sklar. Turissini finished ahead of his teammate, taking fourth overall in 4:15.53, while Sklar placed shortly after in fifth with a mark of 4:16.56.
Amherst claimed two top-10 finishes in the 800 meter run as well. Brent Harrison '16 paced the Jeffs with a fifth-place showing in 1:56.91 and Nick Codola '15 took sixth in 1:57.25.
Rounding out the top track performances were Lucas Lebovitz and the 4x800 relay team. Lebovitz finished 10th overall with a time of 2:39.01 and the 4x800 relay squad finish seventh in 8:01.35.
The Jeffs grabbed three more top-10 finishes in field events. Headlining the group was Mark Cort '15 who took fourth in the long jump with a leap of 6.66 meters.
In the triple jump, Steven Hetterich '15 and Khalil Flemming '16 finished eighth (13.11m) and 10th (12.80m), respectively.
Amherst returns to the track Feb. 28-Mar.1 for the New England Championships hosted by Boston University.
