MEDFORD, Mass. – Josiah Terrell-Perica '15 and Taylor Summers '16 won the men's javelin and women's long jump, respectively, as the Amherst track & field teams opened their outdoor seasons at Tufts University's Snowflake Classic.
Behind several strong performances the women finished sixth (47 pts) out of 24 schools, while the men's team placed 19th (14 pts) out of 26 programs. The Jeffs will return to action on Saturday, Apr. 6 at American International College's Yellow Jacket Invitational.
With a leap of 5.04m, Summers placed first out of 27 competitors in the long jump, while teammate Louise Atadja '16 took 11th (4.52m). Also competing in the 100-meter dash, Summers came in eighth with a time of 12.99. Naomi Bates '14 was fourth overall in the event, clocking in at 12.48.
In the 400m dash, Victoria Hensley '16 and Sarah Whelan '17 finished fifth (1:01.54) and ninth (1:02.46), respectively, while three Jeffs recorded a top-10 showing in the 800-meter run. Hannah Herrera '17 led the way in second with a time of 2:21.68, while Keelin Moehl '16 and Olivia Tarantino '15 were fourth (2:23.39) and ninth (2:27.77).
Pacing Amherst in the 1500-meter run, Amy Dao '14 was the runner-up with a time of 4:49.42, while Kelli Ellingson '15 came in ninth (4:57.00). Crossing the finish line just three tenths of a second later, Cat Lowdon '17 (4:57.30) took 11th. Jessie Kaliski '15 led the way for the Purple & White in the 10,000-meter run placing third with a time of 38:43.84.
On the men's side, Terrell-Perica won the javelin with a toss of 57.11m, closing out the competition 22 feet ahead of his closest competitor. Khalil Flemming '16 was 11th in the long jump (6.14m), while Stephen Hetterich '15 placed 16th overall (6.01m). Dennis Kennelly '16 led the Jeffs in the 400-meter dash with a time of 54.11, while the 4x100 relay came in seventh (44.98).
