SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Matt Melton '14 highlighted the day for the Amherst men's outdoor track and field team with a second place showing Saturday as the Jeffs finished 11th at the Yellow Jacket Invitational hosted by AIC.
Amherst finished with 30 points to place 11th in the 20-team field that featured Division I, II and III schools. Vermont won the meet with 109.50 points followed by UMass Amherst in second with 72.50 and Tufts in third with 66.50. Rounding out the top-five were Central Connecticut (66) in fourth and AIC (53.50) in fifth.
Melton was edged by Jamal Fruster '15 on Central Connecticut in the 400 meter dash as Fruster won in 49.08 seconds followed by Melton in second with a time of 49.37. The senior also took home another top-10 finish by claiming eighth in the 200 meter dash, crossing the finish line in 22.81 seconds. Thomas Mattew '16 competed in the event as well and placed 14th in 22.98.
In other track events, four Jeffs finished in the top-15 in the 1500 meter run. Leading the way were Greg Turissini '15 and Dan Crowley '16. Turissini claimed seventh in 4:01.01 and Crowley finished eighth in 4:01.65. Jeff Seelaus '16 and Kevin Connors '17 finished 13th and 14th with times of 4:05.81 and 4:06.36, respectively.
Other top-10 finishes came from KC Fussell '15 and Jamie Sandel '17. Fussell finished third in the 5000 meter run with a time of 15:22.65 and Sandel took seventh in the 400 meter hurdles in 58.91 seconds.
Matthew also grabbed another top-15 finish for Amherst in the 100 meter dash. With a time of 11.29 seconds, he finished 14th overall.
In field events, Khalil Flemming '16 highlighted the group with a fourth-place showing in the triple jump. He leaped to 13.73 meters while teammate Stephen Hetterich '15 claimed 12th with a mark of 12.23 meters.
Last week's NESCAC Men's Field Performer of the Week, Josiah Terrell-Perica '15, took home seventh place in the javelin throw with a toss of 56.90 meters.
The Jeffs are back in action on Saturday, Apr. 12 for the UMass Invitational.
