SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – Led by senior captain Matt Melton, the Amherst men's track & field team placed 12th out of 32 programs at the 2014 New England DIII Championships hosted by Springfield College.
MIT took home the team title with 159.83 points, followed by Bates (79.33), Bridgewater St. (67), Coast Guard (62) and Southern Maine (40.5) in the top-five. Worcester State (38), Colby (35) and Bowdoin (32) were sixth through eighth, respectively, with Tufts and Williams tying for ninth (30). Middlebury (29.83) edged out Amherst (28) for 11th.
Coming in fifth in the 200-meter dash (22.26), Melton finished as the runner-up in the 400m (48.86), clocking in less than four tenths of a second behind MIT's William Lee '16 (48.49). Brent Harrison '16 led the Jeffs in the 800-meter run, placing ninth with a time of 1:54.69.
Romey Sklar '15 and Kevin Connors '17 finished ninth (3:57.80) and 12th (3:58.72), respectively, in the 1500-meter run, while Dan Crowley '16 was third overall in the 5000m event (15:00.17). Jeff Seelaus '16 posted a 12th-place showing in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:42.25), while Nick Codola '15, Steven Lucey '17, Sklar and Harrison helped Amherst finish second in the 4x800 relay with a time of 7:44.70.
In the field events, Khalil Flemming '16 came in seventh in the triple jump with a leap of 13.20m. Mark Cort '15 also recorded a top-12 showing by placing 11th (6.40m) in the long jump.
Amherst returns to action at the All-New Englands hosted by Westfield St. on May 9-10.
