Jeffs Place Seventh at UMass Invitational

AMHERST, Mass. – Khalil Flemming '16 posted a pair of top-five finishes to lead the Amherst men's track & field team to a seventh-place showing at the University of Massachusetts Invitational.

Earning the Jeffs 10 points, he finished first in the triple jump with a leap of 13.69m, while teammate Stephen Hetterich '15 took ninth (11.95). Also coming in fourth in the long jump (6.43), Flemming later joined Josh Young '17, Javi Paulino '14 and Tom Matthew '16 on Amherst's ninth-place 4x100 relay team that posted a time of 43.54.

Notching the Purple & White's only other victory, Greg Turissini '15 rose to the top of the podium in the 3000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 9:34.12. Dan Crowley '16 also impressed, placing fourth with a time of 9:47.62. 

One of the Jeffs' strongest events on the afternoon, Amherst put three runners in the top-12 of the 5000-meter run, led by Raymond Meijer '17, who finished fourth overall (15:20.15). Jeff Seelaus '16 and Ben Fiedler '17 were seventh (15:42.44) and 12th (15:57.17), respectively.

Romey Sklar '15 led the way in the 1500m, coming in seventh with a time of 4:00.28, while Brent Harrison '16 and Kevin Connors '17 were eighth and 15th in the 800m, crossing the tape in 1:55.41 and 1:57.47, respectively. 

Pacing the Jeffs in the sprint events, Matt Melton '14 took sixth in the 400m dash with a time of 49.64. Matthew placed 11th in the 100m (11.38), while Jamie Sandel '17 recorded a pair of strong performances, coming in 10th in the 110-meter hurdles (16.34) and 11th in the 400m hurdles (57.43).

Rhode Island took home the top team honor with 163 points, followed by Northeastern (146), host UMass (109.50), Central Connecticut State (91) and American International (57) in the top-five. Stonehill (51) finished sixth, while Amherst took seventh (44) as the meet's lone Division III competitor. Holy Cross placed eighth (40.50), with Hartford (24), Boston College (21) and Vermont (18) rounding out the field of 11.

Amherst will host the Little Three Championships on Saturday, Apr. 19.
