NORTHAMPTON, Mass. - Seniors Andrew Erskine and Dillon Buckley finished one-two in the 3000-meter run as the Amherst men's indoor track & field team opened its 2012-13 season at the Smith Invitational.
Clocking in at 9:01.84, Erskine recorded one of five wins for the Jeffs, while Buckley crossed the tape in 9:14.95. Matt Melton '14 recorded the fastest time in the 600-meter run (1:22.41), while Alex Durkee '15 and Nick Codola '15 came in third (1:26.43) and fourth (1:26.44), respectively.
Romey Sklar '15 led the field in the 1000-meter event, finishing in 2:38.78, while juniors Charlie Reighard (2:40.36) and Alvaro Morales (2:43.50) recorded a pair of top-five showings. Morales and Reighard also joined Melton and Gus Greenstein '14 on the Jeffs' first-place 4x800 relay team (8:18.68).
Mark Cort '15 accounted for Amherst's other victory with a meet-best 12.53 meter triple jump. Also placing ninth in the long jump, Cort joined first-years Brent Harrison, Dennis Kennelly and Judd Liebman on the 4x400 relay team that finished third with a time of 3:35.41. Harrison meanwhile led the Jeffs in the 800-meter run, finishing third (2:02.50), while followed closely by classmate Jeff Seelaus '16 (2:02.66).
Dan Crowley was one of four Amherst runners in the top-10 of the mile run, finishing as the runner-up with a time of 4:33.63. KC Fussell '15 came in fifth (4:38.48), followed by Greenstein (4:40.91) and Eli Howe '13 (4:42.51) in sixth and seventh, respectively.
Amherst returns to action Saturday, Jan. 12 at Tufts.
