SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - Three Amherst milers finished just over fourth tenths of a second apart as the men's indoor track and field team put forth a second-place showing at the Springfield Invitational.
Taking home top honors, Pat Grimes '13 finished the mile run in 4:20.20, just two one hundredths of a second ahead of teammate Charlie Reighard '14 (4:20.22). Greg Turissini '15 wasn't far behind, clocking in at 4:20.46 as Amherst swept the top three spots.
Matt Melton '14 led the way in the 800m run, crossing the finish line in 1:56.09. Sophomores Romey Sklar '15 and Nick Codola '15 made sure the Jeffs were once again well represented at the top, placing third (2:00.74) and fourth (2:01.96), respectively.
Also factoring in heavily into the 5000m scoring, Alvaro Morales '14 earned the win with a time of 15:18.11, followed by teammates KC Fussell '15 and Dan Crowley '16, who came in second (15:19.15) and fifth (15:46.29).
Matt Woop '15 posted a third-place finish in the 1000m run, clocking in at 2:38.36, while Dennis Kennelly '16 teamed up with Ralph Washington '16, Persie Gijima '14 and Javi Paulino '14 on the Jeffs' third-place 4x200 relay team (1:37.26).
St. Lawrence won the team title with a score of 125, followed by Amherst (76), RPI (72), Westfield State (64) and Coast Guard (56) in the top five. WPI (51) came in sixth, with Springfield (39), American International (33), Eastern Connecticut St. (24), Keene State (10), and Trinity (3) rounding out the field of 11.
