MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - Matt Melton '14 and Pat Grimes '13 each picked up a win to lead the Amherst men's indoor track & field team to a strong showing at the Wesleyan Invitational.
Placing first in the 400-meter dash, Melton clocked in at 50.88, just ahead of teammate Mark Cort '15, who came in fourth with a time of 53.09. Grimes headlined a trio of Jeffs who finished in the top-10 of the 1000-meter run, taking home the top honor with a time of 2:31.40. The duo also joined Judd Liebman '16 and Adron Pitmon '13 on Amherst's second-place 4x400 relay team that clocked in at 3:31.49.
Romey Sklar '15 also put forth a strong showing in the 1000m, placing sixth (2:36.23), while Greg Turissini '15 came in ninth (2:38.86). Turissini led the way for the Purple & White in the mile run, finishing as the runner-up with a time of 4:22.81, while Dan Crowley '16 and KC Fussell '15 placed fourth (4:25.19) and ninth (4:33.61), respectively.
Joining Crowley and Jeff Seelaus '16 on Amherst's first-place 4x800 relay (8:25.14), Matt Woop '15 and Eli Howe '13 came in third (2:01.36) and sixth (2:02.30) in the 800-meter run, while Alvaro Morales '14 and Lucas Lebovitz '15 turned in solid performances in the 3000-meter event, crossing the tape in second (9:01.75) and fifth-place (9:24.22).
Less than a tenth of a second separated Liebman (1:26.14) and Nick Codola '15 (1:26.21) in the 600-meter run, while Javi Paulino '14 rounded out a strong day by placing fourth in the 200-meter dash (23.90).
Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Jan. 26 at Springfield.
