Jeffs Place Fifth at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, Mass. – Pat Grimes '13 won the 3000-meter run and Andrew Erskine '13 took first in the 5000 meters to lead the Amherst College men's indoor track and field team to a fifth-place finish out of 10 teams at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday.

With 79 points, the Lord Jeffs finished third among NESCAC competitors, trailing first-place Bates (147) and third-place Tufts (99). UMass-Lowell (130) and Worcester State (88.5) rounded out the top five in the team standings.

Also turning in a first-place performance with a time of 8:13.68 was Amherst's 4x800 meter relay team comprised of Matt Melton '14, Eli Howe '13, Adron Pitmon '13 and Alex Durkee '15. In an exciting finish to the day's final running event, the quartet held off Bates' top unit by just over a second.

Earlier in the day, Dennis Kennelly '16 turned in the Jeffs' first top-ten finish of the competition, placing seventh in the 400-meter dash with a time of 53.94. In the next event, Grimes gave Amherst another seventh-place effort, finishing the 600 meters in 1:25.80 to win his heat.

The Jeffs placed three athletes inside the top 10 in the 800-meter run, with Judd Liebman '16 (2:01.49), Romey Sklar '15 (2:04.36) and Matt Woop '16 (2:06.71) taking seventh, eighth and 10th, respectively. In the next men's race, Melton turned in a strong, third-place showing in the 1000 meters (2:35.41), with Howe taking ninth (2:40.26).

Pitmon started the longer distance races off for Amherst with a sixth-place showing in the mile, crossing the line in 4:27.75. Next came Grimes' win in the 3k as he finished in 8:35.44, nearly five seconds ahead of the next runner. Dan Crowley '16 (9:04.43) took ninth in the same race.

Amherst dominated the 5k, with Erskine taking first in 15:20.50 before Charlie Reighard '14 (15:23.48), Greg Turissini '15 (15:26.86), KC Fussell '15 (15:30.18) and Dillon Buckley '13 (15:46) followed him in second through fifth, respectively.

Stephen Hetterich '15 highlighted Amherst's efforts in the field events, taking seventh in both the long jump (5.45m) and the triple jump (11.99m).

The Jeffs will be back on the track on Saturday, Jan. 19, at the Wesleyan Invitational.
