AMHERST, Mass. – Dillon Buckley '13 won the steeplechase and Pat Grimes '13 took second in the 800 meters as the Amherst College men's track and field team placed seventh out of 14 teams at the University of Massachusetts' Minuteman Invitational on Saturday.
Toeing the line against Division I, II and III opponents, the Lord Jeffs tallied 54 team points, trailing second-place Williams (101) and sixth-place Westfield State (62.50) among DIII programs. Northeastern edged out the Ephs with 110.50 points for the team title.
Grimes and Matt Melton '14 notched the Jeffs' first big performances of the day as they placed second and fourth in the 800, clocking in at 1:53.77 and 1:54.75, respectively. Continuing Amherst's strong showing in the middle distances, Romey Sklar '15 took seventh in the 1500 meters (4:02.57) while Dan Crowley '16 followed with an eighth-place finish in the 5k (15:20.32).
Later, the Jeffs took three of the top four spots in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, with Buckley pulling away from the eight-man field to win in 9:35.50 before Greg Turissini '15 took second in 9:42.41 and Charlie Reighard '14 placed fourth (10:04.94).
Amherst's 4x400 Meter Relay team notched a fifth-place mark as Nick Codola '15, Judd Liebman '16, Brent Harrison '16 and Melton finished in 3:21.39. Moving to the field events, Josiah Terrell-Perica '15 enjoyed a pair of top-eight performances as he placed fourth in the discus (41.94m) and seventh in the hammer throw (45.76m), two spots behind teammate Denzel Duncan '13 (47.04m).
The Jeffs will be busy next weekend, competing at Princeton's Larry Ellis Invitational on Friday, April 19, before heading to Williams for the Little III Championships on Saturday.
