CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - Matt Melton '14 set the pace in the 800-meter run to lead the Amherst men's indoor track & field team at the USATF New England Championships hosted by Harvard University.
Outkicking the competition down the stretch, Melton narrowly edged out the win, finishing four tenths of a second ahead of Mike DuPaul with a time of 1:52.26. Romey Sklar '15 also put forth a solid showing, placing ninth with a time of 1:57.87.
Distance runners Pat Grimes '13 and Andrew Erskine '13 finished fourth in the mile (4:13.18) and 5000-meter run (14:54.06), respectively, while Greg Turissini '15 led the way in the 3000m run, coming in fifth at 8:29.31.
Persie Gijima '14 paved the way for Amherst's sprinters, placing eighth in the 60m dash with a time of 7.32. Ralph Washington '16 turned in another solid performance for the Jeffs, finishing 10th in the 200m, clocking in at 23.77.
The distance medley relay team finished as the runner-up with a time of 10:36.16, while Steven Hetterich '15 came in sixth in the triple jump (12.56m).
Amherst returns to action on Feb. 22-23 at the NEICAA Championships hosted by Boston University.
