Scheetz Continues to Impress in Day Two of NCAA Championships

DELAWARE, OH – Junior Ben Scheetz (Lancaster, PA) of the Amherst men's track and field team took the next step in his pursuit of the 800-meter title, posting a time of 1:51.02 to qualify for Saturday's final at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Championships in Delaware, Ohio.

Scheetz, the school's recordholder in both the indoor and outdoor 800-meter run, placed second in the second heat of tonight's preliminary round. The top two finishers of today's three heats plus the next two fastest times qualified for tomorrow's final scheduled for 3:20 p.m.

The Lancaster, PA native, who earlier this winter became just the second Lord Jeff in program history to claim a national title after posting an 800 time of 1:51.26 in the NCAA's Indoor Championships, turned in the field's top qualifying time back on Apr. 22 at the Princeton Memorial Invitational, crossing the tape in 1:48.71 – shattering the program's old outdoor record by 1.51 seconds.

Also returning to the track tomorrow for Amherst is Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX), who will look to improve upon last year's 12th-place finish in the women's 1500. Sullivan earned a spot in Saturday's finale by posting a time of 4:33.36 in Friday night's prelims.
