CAMBRIDGE, MA – The Amherst College outdoor track & field teams wrapped up competition at the 2011 Division III New England Championships, which were held May 5-7 at MIT. The Lord Jeffs will head to Southern Connecticut State University next weekend for the Open New England Championships.

Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA) accounted for Amherst's lone win, as his time of 47.82 in the 400-meter dash left him more than a second ahead of the runner-up. The Lord Jeffs' other three points in the men's events came from John McGrail '11 (Arlington, VA), who finished sixth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (9:27.84).

Amherst's strongest event on the women's side was the 1500-meter run, which saw three Lord Jeffs finish in the top seven. Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, TX) took the runner-up spot by completing the race in 4:37.96, less than a second behind the winner. Keri Lambert '13 (Amherst, MA) placed fifth with a time of 4:42.64, followed by Lauren Almeida '13 (Reading, MA) in seventh (4:44.46).

First-year Naomi Bates (Washington, DC) picked up nine points by placing in the top eight in three events. In addition to finishing fourth in the 100-meter dash (12.35) and sixth in the 200 (25.56), Bates rounded out the scoring in the long jump with a leap of 5.31 meters.

The 13 points earned by Scheetz and McGrail left the Amherst men in 20th place, with Williams (151) and MIT (147) finishing well ahead of the rest of the 31-team field. Women's results have yet to be posted.
