Amherst Teams Place Second at Little Three Championships

AMHERST, MA – The Amherst College outdoor track and field teams joined Wesleyan and Williams in battling the cold and rain at Saturday's Little Three Championships, with the Lord Jeffs taking second place in both the men's and women's meets.

Williams won the women's title with 176 points, followed by Amherst at 114 and Wesleyan with 73. The Ephs earned 161.5 points on the men's side for a comfortable win over the Jeffs (109) and Cardinals (94.5). 

The Ephs won 14 of 17 women's events, while Wesleyan picked up its lone victory in the shot put. Amherst's first of two victories came in the 800-meter run, which Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, TX) won with a time of 2:21.19. Keri Lambert '13 (Amherst, MA) was the top performer in the steeplechase, finishing the 3,000-meter race in 11:25.53. 

Wins were much more spread out on the men's side, with Williams earning nine victories thanks to a dominant showing in the field events. Amherst excelled on the track and finished with six wins in all, while Wesleyan had the top performer in the 100-meter dash, 5K and triple jump. 

Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA) and Matt Melton '14 (Wall, NJ) won the 200 (22.52) and 400 (49.83), respectively, before teaming up with Tommy Moore '11 (Marlborough, MA) and Andrew Reed '12 (Riverside, CT) to post the top time in the 4x400 relay (3:22.79). Steve Corsello '11 (Skaneateles, NY) bested the field in the 800 (1:55.13), Patrick Grimes '13 (Mansfield, MA) won the 1500 (4:03.37), and Dillon Buckley '13 (Wilmington, DE) rounded out Amherst's first-place performances by completing the steeplechase in 9:43.20. 

Weather permitting, the Lord Jeffs will host a mid-week event on Tuesday, Apr. 26. The NESCAC Championships are set to take place on Saturday, Apr. 30, at Wesleyan.
