Scheetz Sets School Record in 800 at Princeton

PRINCETON, NJ – Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA) set a school record in the 800-meter run to lead the Amherst College outdoor track and field teams Friday evening at Princeton University's Larry Ellis Memorial Invitational.

This past winter Scheetz broke several indoor records that had been held by Robert Mitchell '99, and the Amherst junior started to take down the outdoor records by completing Friday's 800 in 1:48.71, which was 1.51 seconds faster than Mitchell's best mark of 1:50.22. The only competitor to finish ahead of Scheetz at Princeton was Dominica's Erison Hurtault, who ran a 1:48.60 to best the 93-member field.

Also competing for Amherst on Friday was John McGrail '11 (Arlington, VA), who completed the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 9:20.35 to place 32nd of 54. Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, TX) and Will Yochum '11 (Goleta, CA) competed in the 1500, with Sullivan finishing 38th of 69 (4:36.56) in the women's race and Yochum landing 71st of 96 (3:58.20) in the men's.

Amherst will welcome Wesleyan and Williams to town on Saturday for the Little Three Championships, which are set to begin at 2 p.m.
