NORTHAMPTON, MA – The Amherst College women's indoor track and field team beat out 10 other squads at Smith College's Tartan Invitational, while the Lord Jeff men placed second in a field of eight schools Saturday afternoon at Smith's Indoor Track and Tennis Facility.
Amherst's women earned 214 points to finish ahead of WPI (178) and the host Pioneers (123). The Amherst men picked up an impressive 215 points, but it wasn't enough to beat out WPI (261.50).
First-year Naomi Bates (Washington, DC) singlehandedly earned 41 points for Amherst with four top-three finishes. In addition to winning the triple jump (10.48m) and long jump (5.14m), Bates placed second in the 55-meter hurdles (9.14s) and third in the 200-meter dash (27.46s).
The Lord Jeff women dominated several distance events, picking up 30 points in the 5,000-meter run thanks to a first-place time of 18:41.12 for Kristen Moulton '13 (North Reading, MA). Amherst added 24 points in the 1,000-meter run after taking the top three spots, with Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, TX) leading the pack at 3:02.77. Amherst also took five of the top seven spots in the mile run and five of the top six in the 800, while Sarah Daly '13 (Wheaton, IL) put in the fastest time in the 3k (10:58.57).
Amherst also featured the top two performances in the women's 4x800 relay and placed second in the 4x400. Jordan Roehl '12 (Portales, NM) recorded the second best mark in the weight throw (14.16m) and placed third in the shot put (10.72m), while first-years Nora Gayer (McLean, VA) and Shyloe Jones (Cranston, RI) were the runners-up in the high jump and 55-meter dash, respectively.
The Amherst men won eight events, led by a dominant 14:52.68 in the 5,000-meter run by John McGrail '11 (Arlington, VA). The Jeffs would earn 31 points in the 5k and another 30 in the 400-meter dash, a race won by Andrew Reed '12 (Riverside, CT) in 50.71 seconds.
The Lord Jeffs also got wins from Will Yochum '11 (Goleta, CA), Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA) and Jack Seaver '11 (New Canaan, CT) in the 800-, 1,000- and 3,000-meter runs, respectively, as Amherst had the top two times in each of those three events. The Jeffs dominated the relays with winning times of 3:25.05 in the 4x400 and 7:52.43 in the 4x800.
Chris Eaton '11 (Brooklyn, NY) had the best performance in the weight throw (16.19m) to lead Amherst in the field events. Javier Paulino '14 (New York, NY) placed second in the 55-meter dash (6.81s) and third in the 200 (24.08s), while Adron Pitmon '13 (Underhill, VT) was the runner-up in the mile (4:28.35).
The Lord Jeffs will return to action next weekend when they head to Boston University for the Valentine Classic.
