BOSTON, MA – Ben Scheetz '12 (Lancaster, PA) edged out Division I competition to win the 800-meter run and lead the Amherst College indoor track and field teams Friday evening at the Reebok Boston Indoor Games. The event was hosted by Northeastern University at the Reggie Lewis Track and Athletic Center.
Scheetz's outstanding performance helped the Amherst men tie Williams College for eighth place among the 17 participating schools, as the Lord Jeffs and Ephs led all Division III programs with 36 points. The Amherst women placed 13th, with Northeastern claiming both team titles.
Scheetz entered the meet as the No. 2 seed in the 800 but would take home the title with a 1:52.28, nearly a full second ahead of Northeastern's Evan Whetsell (1:53.23). Also picking up big points for Amherst was Steven Corsello '11 (Skaneateles, NY), whose 4:13.85 in the mile was good enough for third in a 71-person field.
Corsello would also join Pat Grimes '13 (Mansfield, MA), Taylor Perkins '11 (Chester, NJ) and Adron Pitmon '13 (Underhill, VT) to place third in the distance medley with a time of 10:24.60, well ahead of the other Division III medley teams. The Jeffs would stand out in the 4x400-meter relay (3:20.60) as well, finishing behind only Brown University in the event.
Senior Chris Eaton (Brooklyn, NY) recorded a toss of 15.29 meters in the weight throw last week at the Wesleyan Invitational, but he shattered that mark with a personal-best 16.51 meters to place fourth on Friday in a field of 28, coming in behind competitors from UNH, Northeastern and UMass.
Highlighting Amherst on the women's side were Melissa Sullivan '12 (Dallas, TX) and Ali Simeone '13 (Stoneham, MA). In an 85-person field, Sullivan was the only Division III runner to complete the mile run in under five minutes, placing sixth with a time of 4:59.44. Simeone finished the 3,000-meter run in 10:10.07, which was good enough for sixth. Sullivan also provided the final leg of the distance medley, joining Eliza Schalch '12 (Bethesda, MD), Susan Wasserman '11 (Brooklyn, NY) and Lauren Almeida '13 (Reading, MA) to place seventh (12:26.95).
In the field events, Jess Mueller '13 (East Freetown, MA) and Naomi Bates '14 (Washington, DC) placed 12th (10.83m) and 13th (10.78m), respectively, in the triple jump, while Jordan Roehl '12 (Portales, NM) finished 16th in the weight throw with a toss of 12.98 meters.
The Lord Jeffs will return to action Saturday, Feb. 5, when they head to the Smith College Invitational. Standout distance runner Will Yochum '11 (Goleta, CA) will compete in the mile run at Boston University's Terrier Invitational tomorrow.
