Dan Murner Places 14th in 5k at NCAA Championships

MARIETTA, OH – Amherst College junior Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) was the Lord Jeffs' lone representative at the NCAA Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio. Murner placed 14th in Saturday's 5,000-meter run with a time of 15:35.34.

Winning Saturday's 5k was Peter Kosgei of Hamilton College with a Don Drumm Stadium record time of 14:39.03, finishing less than one second ahead of Carnegie Mellon's Brian Harvey. For complete results from the 2009 championships, visit the Marietta College Championship Website.

Murner began his 2009 outdoor season by winning the 10,000-meter run at the Trinity Bantam Invitational and placing second in the Springfield Invitational 1,500-meter run, but it would be his solid time of 14:39.92 in the 5k at the Apr. 11 UMass Invite that would earn him a trip to the national championships.

His performance at UMass also earned Murner a NESCAC Performer of the Week honor, while his runner-up finish in the 5k at the NESCAC Championships earned him All-Conference recognition. The junior standout finished his outdoor season by placing sixth at the Division III New England Championships and fourth at the ECAC Championships.

Murner will return to action Saturday, Sept. 12, when he and the Lord Jeffs open the 2009 cross country season with the Amherst Invitational.
