AMHERST, MA – Amherst College junior Dan Murner (Crestwood, KY) will represent the Lord Jeffs at the 2009 NCAA Division III Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships this upcoming weekend at Marietta College in Marietta, Ohio.
Murner will compete in the 5,000-meter run on Saturday, May 23 at 3:55 p.m., one of the final events of the three-day national championships. For a complete list of participants and a schedule of events, visit the Marietta Championship Website.
Murner began his 2009 outdoor season by winning the 10,000-meter run at the Trinity Bantam Invitational and placing second in the Springfield Invitational 1,500-meter run, but it would be his solid time of 14:39.92 in the 5k at the Apr. 11 UMass Invite that would earn him a trip to the national championships.
His performance at UMass also earned Murner a NESCAC Performer of the Week honor, while his runner-up finish in the 5k at the NESCAC Championships earned him All-Conference recognition. The junior standout finished his outdoor season by placing sixth at the Division III New England Championships and fourth at this past weekend's ECAC Championships.
The last Amherst runner to win an outdoor national championship was Robert Mitchell '99, who claimed the 1998 and 1999 titles in the 1,500-meter run.
