MEDFORD, MA – Junior Daniel Murner (Crestwood, KY) won the 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run to lead Amherst College at the 2009 Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Division III ECAC Championships. The Lord Jeff men finished second in a field of 50 teams, while the Amherst women tied for 19th place in a field of 51.
Amherst's 41 points on the men's side were second only to Saint Lawrence's 53, as Murner accounted for 20 of the team's points with his two victories. After winning the 5k on Friday with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 14:47.86, Murner finished the 3k on Saturday in a time of 8:36.73.
Adding a win on Saturday was junior Jimmy Swanson (New Orleans, LA), who also had an NCAA provisional qualifying performance with his 4:14.61 in the 1-mile run. Rounding out the individual point-scorers for Amherst was junior William Bell (Silver Spring, MD), who placed third in the 1,000-meter run with a time of 2:31.47. Picking up the final five points for the Lord Jeff men was the 4x800 relay team, which placed fourth.
Amherst put in three top-10 performances on the women's side to finish in a tie with Smith College at 15 points. The 5k featured three Lord Jeffs, as sophomore Hallie Schwab (Stone Ridge, NY), junior Sophia Galleher (Denver, CO) and senior Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) placed 11th, 12th and 16th, respectively.
The 500-meter dash also featured a trio of Amherst runners, who combined to pick up eight team points. Sophomore Susie Wasserman (Brooklyn, NY) placed fourth with a time of 1:19.02, with senior Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) close behind in sixth place with a time of 1:19.20. Junior Mary Doris Reggie (Crowley, LA) rounded out the group by running a 1:20.55 to place ninth in the event.
Accounting for Amherst's other seven points were junior Hoiwan Cheung (Hanover, NH) and senior Molly Priedeman (Wayzata, MN), who finished fifth (3:05.45) and sixth (3:06.39), respectively, in the 1,000-meter run. First-year Melissa Sullivan (Dallas, TX) also put in a solid performance in the 800-meter run, placing 13th with a time of 2:19.92.
Select members of the Lord Jeff teams will return to action next weekend to take part in the 2009 NCAA Championships at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology in Terre Haute, Indiana. More information will be made available next week.
