SPRINGFIELD, MA – The Amherst women's 4x800 relay team claimed the New England Division III crown, posting a school and meet record, at the Regional Championships hosted by Springfield College on Saturday. The women's squad finished sixth overall, while the Jeff men raced to a strong 15th-place showing. Perennial regional powerhouse Williams College took both the men's and women's titles.
Senior co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) anchored the victorious 4x800 team, while junior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA), sophomore Meg Ray (Menands, NY) and rookie Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) chipped in for the record-breaking 9:18.08 finish. Polich also took fifth-place in the 800-meter run (2:16.07) and sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) earned provisional qualification for NCAA competition in the 5,000-meter run with her 17:44.76 third-place time. First-year Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) raced in the 10K for the first time, claiming the runner-up spot, and was followed closely by classmate Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) and sophomore Katie Moravec (Chico, CA), who took fourth and fifth. Junior Maria Millard (Orono, ME) grabbed fourth-place in the 400-meter hurdles, and sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) rounded out the Jeffs' top finishers with a fifth-place time in the 5,000-meter race.
Rookie Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) led the men's side, taking third place and setting a new first-year record, with his 9:34.09 finish in the steeplechase. Sophomore Mike Harbus (New York, NY) and rookie Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) finished just three seconds apart in the 5K, taking fifth and seventh, respectively, while junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) raced to a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run. Junior John Babbott (Ojai, CA) also had an outstanding day, claiming seventh place in the 1,500-meter.
The Jeffs return to action on Friday at the Open New England Championships hosted by MIT.
