WILLIAMSTOWN, MA – Junior Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and rookie Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) each posted first-place finishes for Amherst College as the men's and women's track and field teams competed at the Williams College Relays on Saturday. Garrahan bested the field in the 3,000-meter steeplechase (11:27.20), while Lakehomer won the 5,000-meter run in 15:29.12.
The women's team saw tremendous success all day, as senior co-captains Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) finished less than .1 seconds apart in the 400-meter dash to take second and third place, respectively, and first-year Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) rounded out the top five two seconds later. Rookie Zandra Walton picked up a pair of third-place finishes, in the 800-meter run, in which she crossed the tape just ahead of sixth-place finisher classmate Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA), and the 1,500-meter run. Junior Maria Millard (Orono, ME) claimed second in the 400-meter hurdles, while first-year Kate Silverman (Upper Montclair, NJ) took fifth. The 1,600-meter sprint medley team of Rucker, Polich, Murphy and junior Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) posted a second-place showing in 4:20.29, four seconds ahead of Millard, Walton, Garrahan and rookie Jenny Mancino (New York, NY), who took third.
On the men's side, senior co-captain Tim Porter (Newton, MA), juniors Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) and sophomore Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) took home the second first-place finish of the day, besting the 1,600-meter sprint relay competition in 3:50.96. Not far behind were juniors Geoff Stricsek (Harrison City, PA) and Eric Glustrom (Boulder, CO) and sophomores Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) and Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT), who took second less than six seconds later. Beaty and Hayman each posted a second-place individual finish, in the 400-meter dash (51.27) and the 800-meter run (1:58.82), respectively. Amherst dominated the 3,000-meter steeplechase, getting a 2-3-5 finish from juniors Robert Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) and Richard Wilson (Columbus, OH) and rookie Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT). Junior John Babbott (Ojai, CA) also posted a second-place showing, completing the 1,500-meter run in 4:11.39.
Amherst returns to action Saturday at 10 a.m. at UMass-Lowell.
