MIDDLETOWN, CT – Sophomore sensation Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) raced to a first-place finish in the 3,000-meter run as the Amherst College indoor track and field team posted strong performances all around at the Wesleyan Invitational on Saturday. Morrissey's 8:50.83 showing bested his closest competitor by nearly 13 seconds and led a battalion of four Amherst runners in the top 10, as junior Rich Wilson (Columbus, OH), rookie Peter Foote (Shelburne, VT) and junior Rob Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) placed fifth, eighth and 10th, respectively. The Jeff women were at reduced strength at Wesleyan, as select runners competed at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University, where first-year Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) placed 19th in the 800-meter run, contending against runners from NCAA Divisions I, II, and III. Sophomore Kim Partee (Brentwood, TN) was the women's top finisher at Wesleyan, taking the silver in the one-mile run in 5:24.77.
Morrissey rounded out a stellar day, adding a third-place finish in the men's one-mile (4:29.80) to his 3K victory, and leading classmate Mike Harbus (New York, NY) and first-years Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) and Joe Addison (Midlothian, VA), who raced to eighth, 10th and 17th places, respectively. Junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) took runner-up honors in the 500-meter with his 1:08.19 finish, while senior Dave Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) earned third in the 5,000-meter run (15:39.06). Hayman also anchored the 4x400-meter relay team of sophomores Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA), Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) and Steve Stewart (Hartford, CT), who raced to second place in 3:30.85. Senior co-captain Tim Porter (Newton, MA), junior John Babbott (Ojai, CA), sophomore Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) and rookie Harrison Lakehomer (Eugene, OR) earned fifth in the distance medley relay (11:08.25), while Babbott took sixth in the 800-meter run.
On the women's side, Partee's second place showing led a strong Amherst contingent in the one-mile run at Wesleyan, as sophomore Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and rookies Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) and Tovah Ackerman (Eden Prairie, MN) placed 10th, 11th and 18th. Amherst dominated the 1,000-meter run as well, as Partee placed fourth, followed by Moravec in seventh and Dalton in ninth. Meanwhile, first-year Mariana Palacios (Gex, France) raced to a 1:27.57 finish in the 500-meter run, good for third-place, and finished just five seconds ahead of sophomore Lauren Benson (Hamilton, NJ), who took ninth. Rookie Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) earned fifth in the 800-meter and also ran a leg of the 4x400-meter relay to lead Amherst to a third-place showing.
At the Terrier Classic, Walton's 17th place time in the 800-meter (2:18.67) led 23rd- and 31st-place finishers senior co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and rookie Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA), and she also raced to 27th in the one-mile run. In the 5,000-meter, sophomore Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and rookie Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) finished seconds apart to take 24th and 25th, while fellow first-year Elise Tropiano (Plainville, NY) earned 38th.
Both squads return to the track on Saturday at the Smith Invitational at 10 a.m.
