Indoor Track And Field Excels At Tufts Invitational II

MEDFORD, MA – The Amherst women's indoor track and field team posted a third-place showing as they picked up two wins at the Tufts Invitational II on Saturday, while the men's team finished ninth. Host Tufts University won both the men's and women's meets. Rookie Zandra Walton (Skaneateles, NY) raced to a first-place finish in the 1,000-meter run (3:00.55) and also combined with classmates Caitlin McDermott-Murphy (Newton, MA) and Carly Levenson (Richmond, VA) and senior co-captain Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) as they bested the distance medley relay field in 12:43.67.

The members of the DMR team also shone in their individual events,as McDermott-Murphy posted a second-place showing in the 800-meter run (2:22.26), Levenson raced to a 1:21.fourth-place finish in the 500-meter run and Polich took fifth in the 1-mile run. Meanwhile, sophomore sensation Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) earned the runner-up spot in the 3,000-meter run, finishing in 20:21.37 with first-years Nicole Anderson (Kailua, HI) and Elise Tropiano (Plainville, NY) right on her heels for third and sixth places, respectively. Junior Hannah Campbell raced to fourth place in the 200-meter dash and combined with senior co-captain Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and rookies Kathryn Loomis (Glastonbury, CT) and Jenny Mancino (New York, NY) to take second in the 4x200-meter relay. Rucker, Campbell and Mancino also joined with junior Maria Millard (Orono, ME) to earn third in the 4x400-meter relay, and Millard posted a sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run. In the 5,000-meter run sophomore Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) and rookie Liz Dalton (Wayne, PA) finished 34 seconds apart to take fifth-and sixth-place, respectively, for Amherst.

On the men's side, sophomore Mike Harbus (New York, NY) took the runner-up spot in the 5,000-meter run with a scorching time of 15:35.06. Junior Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) raced to third-place in the 1,000-meter run in 2:34.34, while classmate John Babbott took 11th. Sophomore Basile Beaty (Belmont, MA) posted a 1:08.76 fourth-place finish in the 500-meter run, while senior David Schreiner (Manhattan Beach, CA) took fifth in the 3,000-meter run. Hayman and Beaty joined with sophomores Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) and Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) for sixth place in the men's distance medley relay, and senior co-captain Tim Porter (Newton, MA), sophomores Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) and Stephen Shashy (McLean, VA) and rookie Stephen Stewart (Hartford, CT) combined to post a fifth-place showing in the 4x400-meter relay.

Both squads return to action this weekend at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University. The men race on Friday, with the women's competitions set for Saturday.
