SPRINGFIELD, MA - The Amherst College women's outdoor track and field team posted a sixth-place finish at the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Division III Championships, hosted by Springfield College over the weekend, while the men's squad finished 28th. Sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) and first-year Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) captured individual championships for the women, and senior Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) earned a second-place finish for the men.
Garrahan led a one-two placing in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 4:36.24, just .04 seconds ahead of All-America teammate Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA). Wilson earned provisional qualification to the NCAA Championships in the 10,000-meter run, crossing the line in 37:20.50, and senior teammate Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) came in eighth at 39:17.80. Juniors Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) claimed seventh- and eighth-place finishes in the 800-meter and 5,000-meter runs, respectively, while senior co-captain Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) grabbed fifth in the triple jump, ninth in the long jump and 10th in the 100-meter hurdles.
Morgan finished the 800-meter run in 1:53.95, missing NCAA provisional qualification by just .35 seconds. Classmate Mike Page (Fargo, ND) took home seventh in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in 3:58.22.
Page, Hamill and Garrahan have already qualified for next weekend's NCAA Championship meet, hosted by Wartburg (Iowa) College, as Page will compete in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, Hamill is slotted for the 5,000- and 10,000-meter runs and Garrahan will race in the 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs and the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Davis and Wilson await word of qualification in the 10K, and Henry hopes to qualify in the triple jump.
