April 18, 2005

LOWELL, MA - Senior All-Americas Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) and Mike Page (Fargo, ND) and sophomore All-America Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) all posted NCAA Championship qualifying times to lead the Amherst College men's and women's outdoor track and field teams at the George Davis Invitational, hosted by UMass Lowell on Saturday. Hamill posted an automatic qualifier in the women's 5,000-meter run, while Page grabbed provisional qualification in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and Garrahan raced to provisional times in the women's 1,500- and 5,000-meter runs.

Hamill's time of 16:47.55 was good enough to win the 5,000, while Garrahan followed in second at 17:12.38, and senior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) nabbed sixth in 18:24.92. Garrahan topped the 1,500 in 4:40.51, and rookie Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) and junior Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) finished second and fourth, respectively, in the 3,000-meter run. Other top performances for the Jeffs included senior Lee-Jay Henry's (Springfield, MA) second- and eighth-place finishes in the long jump and 100-meter hurdles, respectively; junior Krissy Morin's (Litchfield, NH) fourth-place showing in the javelin throw; and sophomore Nzingha Tyehemba's (New York, NY) ninth-place effort in the 400-meter hurdles. The 4x400-meter relay team also excelled as Henry teamed with junior Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) and sophomores Keyonte Sutherland (Brooklyn, NY) and Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) for second place.

Page took home the men's steeplechase with a time of 9:17.51, followed closely by sophomore Robert Boley (Mount Pleasant, MI) in fifth (10:06.57) and sophomore Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) in eighth (10:17.08). First-year Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) and senior Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) posted fifth- and seventh-place showings, respectively, in the two-mile run, and sophomore All-America John Babbott (Ojai, CA) grabbed sixth in the 1,500-meter run. Babbott also joined sophomores Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) and Jon Ettinger (Bethesda, MD) and first-year Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) for a seventh-place finish in the 4x400-meter relay. Junior Nick Canevari (Warwick, NY) paced the Jeffs in the field events, placing ninth in the javelin throw and 15th in the shot put.

Both teams return to action Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. as they host Trinity College, UMass Lowell and Keene State College.
