Amherst Women's Indoor Track Fifth, Men Sixth at Tufts Invitational

MEDFORD, MA - The Amherst College women's indoor track team earned 58 points and a fifth-place finish at the Tufts Invitational on Saturday, while the men compiled 55 points and took sixth. Junior Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) and sophomore Shauneen Garrahan (Fairfax Station, VA) claimed first-place finishes for the women, while senior Mike Page (Fargo, ND) picked up the lone individual victory for the men. 

Polich won the 800 with a time of 2:19.16, while Garrahan bested the field in the 1,000 in 2:56.85. They also teamed with junior Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) and first-year Heather Wilson (Danvers, MA) to win the distance medley relay (DMR) and qualify provisionally for the NCAA Championships. First-year Katie Moravec (Chico, CA) finished third in the 3,000, while sophomore Hannah Campbell (Garnerville, NY) and senior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) nabbed fourth in the 55-meter dash and the 5,000, respectively. Senior co-captain Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) led the 4x200- and 4x400-meter relay squads to third- and fourth-place finishes, respectively. Scott, Campbell and junior Julia Rucker (Minneapolis, MN) teamed with Henry in the 4x200, and Campbell, Rucker and sophomore Maria Millard (Orono, ME) joined Henry in the 4x400. 

Page's time of 8:34.13 was good enough to earn his second straight win in the 3,000. Sophomore Jon Ettinger (Chevy Chase, MD) took third in the 200, as did classmate Sam Hayman (Evanston, IL) in the 500 and first-year Tomas Morrissey (Astoria, OR) in the 3,000. Ettinger, junior Tim Porter (Newton, MA), sophomore Geoff Stricsek (Harrison City, PA) and first-year Stephen Shashy (McLean, VA) teamed to take second in the 4x200-meter relay. Sophomore Cooper Knowlton (Montclair, NJ) earned a fourth-place finish in the 5,000 and senior Matt Katz (Tallahassee, FL) finished sixth in the mile. The men grabbed fourth in the 4x400-meter relay and the DMR as first-year Ben Read (Barkhamsted, CT) joined Stricsek, Porter and Ettinger in the 4x400, while Hayman, Katz, sophomore John Babbott (Ojai, CA) and first-year Rom Cabeza (Enfield, CT) teamed in the DMR. 

Both squads return to action Friday at 5 p.m. at the Terrier Classic hosted by Boston University.
