May 17, 2004

WILLIAMSTOWN, MA - Paced by first-year All-America Shauneen Garrahan's (Fairfax Station, VA) fifth school-record run in as many meets, the Amherst women tied for sixth place with Richard Stockton College at the ECAC Outdoor Track & Field Championships, held this past Friday and Saturday at Williams College. The men, competing with just three runners, were led by Dave Molina's (Cleveland, OH) sixth-place finish in the 800-meter run (1:54.05), and ended the two-day meet in a three-way tie for 47th place.

For the women, Garrahan took down her own school record in the 800-meter run; her time, a blazing 2:15.73, was good enough for second place and earned her a provisional qualifier for the NCAA championships. Two-time indoor 5k champion Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) grabbed second place and qualified provisionally for nationals in the 1,500-meter run with a time of 4:38.69, while senior Aly Venti (Newton, MA) took home second place in the 10,000-meter run, qualifying provisionally for the NCAA championships.

Sophomore Margaret Davis (Richmond, VA) captured fifth place in the 10,000-meter run, while classmate Ginger Polich (Ironwood, MI) finished seventh in the 800-meter run and junior Alison Rodriguez (Albany, NY) placed eighth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Sophomore Kristine Morin (Litchfield, NH) and junior Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) placed eighth and 11th, respectively, in the heptathlon, and sophomore All-America Ariel Haney (Fairport, NY) finished 15th in the 400-meter dash.

For the men, senior All-America Janak Chandrasoma (Pasadena, CA) grabbed 11th place in the 200-meter dash and 12th place in the 400-meter dash, while junior All-America Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) finished 21st in the 400.

Williams took home the women's overall championship, while SUNY Cortland earned the men's title.

Amherst wraps up its 2004 track and field campaign at the NCAA Outdoor Championships, hosted by Millikan University (Decatur, IL) on May 27-29.
