  • Jeffs Excel at Open New Englands, ECACs

    Both sides of the Amherst outdoor track team posted several notable performances during the Open New Englands Track and Field Championships, held at the University of New Hampshire from Thursday, May 8 to Saturday, May 10, and the ECAC Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championship Meet, hosted by MIT on Thursday and Friday.

    The Amherst women’s outdoor track team turned in an eighth-place finish at the Division III New England Championships at Williams College on Saturday, and the men followed up with a 13th-place day at Bates College.

    The Amherst men’s and women’s outdoor track teams participated in the NESCAC Championships, hosted by Williams College, on Saturday. The women ended the meet in eighth place, while the men landed in 11th place. The host Ephs took team championship honors on both the men’s and women’s scoreboards.

    Despite winter weather conditions, the Amherst men’s and women’s outdoor track teams posted strong individual performances at Sunday’s Springfield College Invitational, originally slated to take place at Trinity College. On Saturday, the squad will run at the Williams Relays, hosted by Williams College, before beginning its series of championship meets.

    The Amherst men’s and women’s outdoor track teams began their spring campaigns on a tear on Saturday at the Connecticut College Invitational. For the men, strong performances from all sides contributed to a second place team finish behind the United States Coast Guard Academy. On the women’s side, the first-year class showed up in force, lifting Amherst to a first-place finish over second-place Coast Guard.
  • Defending NCAA Champ Carter Hamill Qualifies for Nationals, Paces Track Teams at ECAC Indoor Championships

    Defending national champion Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) qualified for the NCAA National Championship meet for the second straight season with a blistering time in the 5,000-meter run, as the Amherst men’s and women’s indoor track teams competed at this weekend’s ECAC Championship meet at Tufts University. Hamill, a sophomore who has earned multiple All-America accolades, also combined with senior tri-captain Kate Hamill (New York, NY) and first-years Jessamyn Connell-Price (Palo Alto, CA) and Lyndsey Scott (West Orange, NJ) to qualify for Nationals in the Distance Medley Relay, breaking the school record by 13 seconds en route to a fourth-place finish. The women’s team finished 21st in the team standings, behind overall winner Wheaton College. Meanwhile, the men ran to a 20th-place finish, behind first-place The College of New Jersey.
  • Women 16th, Men 25th at Open New England Championships

    The Amherst women’s and men’s indoor track teams pulled in respectable finishes at their respective Open New England Championship Meets over the weekend, heading into next weekend’s ECAC Championships at Tufts University. At Smith College, the women placed 16th in a strong field, led by first-place Northeastern University. Williams College finished in seventh place. For Amherst, sophomore standout Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) picked up fourth place in the 3,000-meter run, two seconds behind Eph runner Caroline Cretti. The 4x800-meter relay team came through for second place, six seconds ahead of the Williams delegation.

    Sophomore Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) took first place in the 1,000-meter run to supplement a first-place time from the women’s 4x800-meter relay team, and the Amherst men’s Distance Medley relay team claimed the top spot in their field to match first-place junior Andrew Schneider (Saratoga Springs, NY) in the 1,000-meter run, as the indoor track team competed for individual times at Saturday’s Tufts University Track & Field Stampede. The meet was the squad’s last chance to prep for the Division III New Englands this Saturday; the men will travel to M.I.T, and the women will run at Bowdoin College.

The 2002-2003 season is wrapping up for the Jeffs, with the Division III New England Championship meet scheduled for Feb. 22, and the Open New England Championships the weekend after.
