Indoor Track Teams Post Strong Showings at New England Division III Championships

February 16, 2002

GORHAM, ME and LEWISTON, ME - The Amherst College indoor track teams competed in the New England Division III Championships this weekend. At the University of Southern Maine, the women finished the day with 46 points, good for fifth place behind Wheaton College, Williams College, Keene State College and Tufts University. Meanwhile, at Bates College in Lewiston, the men's team notched an 11th-place finish with 19 points. The men's meet saw a tie for the top spot for the first time in meet history, as Williams and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology came off the track with 150.5 points each.

The highlight of the day for the Amherst men was a third-place, 8:05.04 finish from the 4x800-meter relay team. The best individual performance from the Jeff men came in the form of a fourth-place 1500-meter run from sophomore John Stanton-Geddes (Glendale, MO). First-years David Molina (Cleveland, OH) and Jack Morgan (Las Vegas, NV) teamed up for sixth and 12th places, respectively, in the 800-meter run, and first-year Jay Wagstaff (Tewksbury, MA) took home a 6.72 55-meter dash for sixth place.

Williams, MIT, and third-place finisher Wheaton combined to dominate the men's meet. The three schools won 13 of the 20 events, and Wheaton's 81 points outpaced fourth-place Tufts University's points total by a gap of more than 20.

Senior Amie Shei (Lexington, MA) started off the day for the women with a fifth place showing in the triple jump. The 800-meter run put some points on the board for Amherst. Juniors Laurel Kilgour (Clifton Park, NY) and Kate Hamill (New York, NY) teamed up for eighth and ninth places, respectively, and seniors Anne Perez (Chappaqua, NY) and Diana Rancourt (Lunenberg, MA) crossed the line soon after for 12th and 15th places.

The Jeff women stretched their legs in the longer runs. Sophomore Alyson Venti (Newton, MA) took a fourth-place, 3:03.97 finish home in the 1000-meter run, and first-year Carter Hamill (Richmond, VA) powered to a 4:40.75 fourth-place showing in the 1500-meter run. Senior Rebecca Woo (Manchester, NH) finished close on Hamill's heels, with a seventh-place, 4:51.53 performance. The 5000-meter run saw sophomore Erinn White (Watertown, MA), first-year Sarah DeGraaf (Langley, WA), and senior Cecily Brewer (W. Lafayette, IN) take third, sixth, and 15th places, respectively.

The 4x800-meter relay team grabbed second place in 9:36.34, the highest finish of the day for the Amherst women. First-year Lee-Jay Henry (Springfield, MA) placed seventh in the long jump and 14th in the high jump, and sophomore Helen Dole (Shelburne Falls, MA) rounded out the day for Amherst with an eighth-place finish in the pentathlon.

This weekend, the two teams will split up again, this time for the Open New England Championships. The men will travel to Boston University, and the women will compete at Tufts.
