Three Doubles Teams Win on Day 1 of ITA Regionals

WATERVILLE, Maine – All three doubles teams out of Amherst College reached the Round of 16 and will play on Saturday morning after victories on the opening day of Men's Tennis ITA Regionals at Colby College.

Damien Ruparel '22 and Marek Michulka '23 were 8-5 winners over Maximo Lawler and Bass Lin from Emerson College.

The number four seed in the tournament, Sean Wei '21 and Harris Foulkes '22 topped Ezekiel Hall and Jonathan Frink of Gordon College by an identical score.

Kevin Ma '21 and Shaw Rhinelander '23 were also 8-5 winners, topping David Kalmer and Luke Surawski of Western New England.

Unfortunately for the Mammoths, things didn't go as well in the singles draw.

Michulka was the only Mammoth to get out of the first round, defeating Brandon Howard of Nichols 6-2, 7-5 to reach the Round of 32. Michulka bowed out of the tournament with a 6-1, 6-0 loss to Noah Lilienthal of Wesleyan.

Several Amherst players suffered tough three-set defeats. Wei, the top seed overall in the tournament, took the first set from Alex Vanezis of Middlebury 603, but then fell 6-3 and 6-4.

Willie Turchetta '22 was eliminated by Isaac Gorelik of Tufts, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 and Ruparel also took a tough three set decision (6-1, 2-6, 6-3) against Stan Morris of Middlebury.

Ma fell to MIT's Michael Zhao 6-3, 2-6, 7-5, while Foulkes had a tough draw against #2 seed Boris Sorkin and was eliminated in straight sets (6-0, 6-1).

Each of the double teams will be on the courts tomorrow at 9:00 AM hoping to continue their run at an ITA title.
