Amherst Sweeps Singles Play, Knocks Off Trinity 8-1

HARTFORD, Conn. -- The Amherst College men's tennis team, ranked #9 in the country, has won six straight matches after an 8-1 victory over Trinity College on Sunday afternoon. 

Amherst is now 11-2 overall and 3-0 in New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) play.

Next up for Amherst is a home tilt next Sunday with Bowdoin College, currently ranked #5 in the nation. The Polar Bears, who were runners-up to Middlebury in last year's national championship, will be in town for a 12:00 PM start.

For the fifth consecutive match, Amherst le 2-1 after doubles play, and for the fourth time in that span that was accomplished by wins at the top two doubles spots.

Amherst also got five of their six singles wins in straight set fashion, including a 6-2, 6-2 win at first singles by Jayson Fung  '20 and a 6-0, 6-2 win at fourth singles by William Turchetta '22, who paired with classmate Harris Foulkes for an 8-6 win at second doubles.

Zach Bessette '19 and Damien Ruparel '22 were 8-5 winners at the top doubles position with Ruparel also topping Chris Caskin of the Bantams 6-2, 6-3 at fifth singles.

Kevin Ma '21 won in three sets at #2 singles (6-3, 3-6, 10-2) and Oliver Kendall '19 went 6-4, 7-6 (5) at the #6 position, though he and Fung fell 8-2 at #3 doubles.

Trinity (1-6, 0-3 NESCAC) travels to Tufts on Wednesday for a 4:00 PM match.
