Amherst Hands #6 CMS First Loss of the Year

AMHERST, Mass. -- Amherst College took a 4-1 lead over #6 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and then got a clinching win from first year William Turchetta to emerge with a 5-4 victory over the Stags in men's tennis action Friday afternoon at Bay Road Tennis Club.

The #7 ranked Mammoths improve to 7-2 on the year while dealing the Stags (13-1) their first loss of the year.

Turchetta won in straight sets over Casey Morris to clinch the victory that inlcuded two doubles wins and speedy singles wins by Sean Wei '21 and Jayson Fung '20.

Wei and Fung won 8-5 at first doubles to close out the doubles play with the Mammoths up 2-1. Harris Foulkes '22 and Zach Bessette '19 did their part with an 8-3 win at second doubles to kick off the match at the indoor venue.

After Wei defeated Nikolai Parodi 6-0, 6-2 and Fung topped Julian Gordy 6-3, 6-2, the Stags fought back into the match. Jack Katzman and Robert Liu won at second and fourth singles before Daniel Park topped Foulkes 6-3, 6-0 at #5 singles to tie the match.

Turchetta battled to the victory with a 6-3, 6-2 win over Morris.

CMS continues an East Coast trip when they head to Williams for a 6:00 PM match next Tuesday.

Amherst is home Sunday for an 11:00 AM match against Swarthmore.
