LEWISTON, Maine. – Amherst men's tennis team saw success on day one in the singles draw as they went 14-1 collectively, placing seven players in the semifinals over four flights for tomorrows action at the Wallach Invite.
In the singles draw (Flight A), Sean Wei '21 fell to Justin Wang of Bowdoin College in the round of sixteen 6-3, 6-3. Kevin Ma '21 was able to make it to the semifinals after defeating Anupreeth Coramutla of Brandeis 6-1, 6-1 before taking down Jt Wynne of Skidmore College 6-1, 7-5.
In Flight B, Jayson Fung '20 and Zach Bessette '19 both placed in the semifinals, only giving up one set between the both of them. Fung defeated Max Schuermann of Colby College 6-1, 6-2 before beating Rajan Vohra of Brandeis 4-6, 6-3, 10-4. Bessette failed to lose a set as he took down his opponents 6-2, 6-3 and then 6-3, 6-2.
In Flight C, Harris Foulkes '22 and Damien Ruparel '22 also made it to the semifinals with Duparel only dropping one set through two matches. Foulkes won his matches 6-2, 6-2 on both occasions, while Ruparel took down Peter Messenger of Colby 6-1, 7-5 before defeating Tyler Ng of Brandeis 4-6, 6-3, 10-7.
In Flight D, William Turchetta '22 and Jesse Levitin '22 also notched a semifinal appearance, failing to lose a set between the both of them. Levitin took down Sam Hoenig of Colby 6-2, 6-2 before defeating Jason Scanlon of Tufts 6-2, 6-2 as well. Turchetta matched Levitin as he took down Albert Ortega Campos of Wheaton 6-0, 6-2 before posting a 6-4, 6-4 victory against Ross Kamin of Tufts.
Wei and Bessette are leading the way for the Mammoths in the doubles draw (Flight A) as they will contest in the semifinals tomorrow against Niko Hereford and Carl Grant of Tufts University. In their first match, they went up against Evan Fortier and Larry Zhao of Bowdoin College where they went on to win 8-6. They then faced Nikhil Das and Rajan Vohra of Brandeis in the Quarterfinals where they marked an 8-1 win. Ruparel and Fung were the other duo in Flight A as they lost in the round of 16 to Jeff Chen and Tyler Ng of Brandeis University 8-6.
In Flight B Foulkes and Turchetta fell in the round of 16 to Justin Patel and Oscar Yang of Bowdoin College 8-5. Levitin and Ma edged the duo of Albert Ortega Campos and Zach Strempel of Wheaton College 8-7(3) before facing off against Ben Maffa and Ben Wolfe of Brandeis in the Quarterfinal, winning 8-7(3) again.
