Day One Completed at the ITA New England Regional Championship

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The first day of the ITA New England Regional Championship has come to a close as Amherst Men's Tennis has two pairings still in the running for the doubles draw alongside two student-athletes heading into the third round of competition in the singles draw.

In the doubles bracket, Zach Bessette '19 and Jayson Fung '20 came into the weekend as the number one seed. They faced off against Guilherme Barbosa and Brandon Howard of Nichols College where they went on to win 8-4. Mammoths William Turchetta '22 and Damien Ruparel '22 had a similar match as they beat Emerson by a final score of 8-5. Both pairings have moved onto the second round where they will serve up at 9:00 AM tomorrow. Bessette and Fung will face off against Wesleyan whereas Turchetta and Ruparel will go up against Middlebury.

The last pair of Mammoths, Sean Wei '21 and Harris Foulkes '22, fell early in doubles as they dropped to Middlebury's Weston Brach and David Vilys by an 8-5 mark.

In the singles draw, Jayson Fung '20 started off well as he took down Nate Lookwhy of Gordon College 6-0, 6-2. He then fell in the second round to Alex Taylor of Williams College in a thrilling 1-6, 6-3, 10-8 feat. Foulkes finished just like Fung as he won the first round 6-4, 6-3 before dropping to Brandeis 2-6, 6-4, 10-5.

Mammoth Kevin Ma, who came in at the fifth seed, is still in the running heading into the second day of competition as he took down Sumukh Pathi of Colby College 6-0, 6-3 before shutting out Tufts Carl Grant by a score of 6-0 in both sets. Wei also competed in the singles draw as the number two seed; he made short work of Wesleyan's Zach Lieb (6-3, 6-4) before winning an exciting 1-6, 7-5, 10-3 victory over Andre Xiao of Middlebury College.

Bessette also went up against Adam Tzeng of Brandeis in the first round of the singles draw where he fell short by a score of 4-6, 7-6(5), 10-8.
