SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – The No. 7 ranked Amherst men's tennis team opened their season with dual match success as they went on to beat Skidmore College 8-1, and Hobart College 8-1, in non-league tennis action at the Wenger Courts on Saturday.
In the first game against Skidmore at the No. 1 spot, Harris Foulkes '22 and Zach Bessette '19 took down Travis Leaf and JT Wynne by a score of 8-5. At No. 3, Kevin Ma '21 and William Turchetta '22 had a hard fought battle against Jason Keye and Jack McClaren, eventually taking the win by a score of 8-6.
Amherst swept five of the six singles matches in straight sets, but was stopped by Skidmore's Noah Williamson who took Sean Wei '21 to a third set in second singles, but fell to Wei 6-4, 4-6, 6-0.
The Mammoths had another strong showing against Hobart later that day as they went on to sweep the doubles matches. Bessette and Wei took down Alan Dubrovsky and Walker Anderson at No. 1 doubles by a score of 8-6. Foulkes and Damien Ruparel '22 made short work of Thomas Shung and Atwater as they won 8-2 at the number two spot. Oliver Kendall '19 and Jesse Levitin '19 finished the sweep by posting an 8-5 victory against Jack Ledford and Colin Molloy.
The Mammoths clinched the overall victory with wins in the fourth and fifth singles positions where Ruparel took down Shung 6-1, 6-0 and Turchetta came back to beat David Reinharz 1-6, 6-0, 10-3. Ledford collected Hobart's only point as he took down Levitin 6-7 (5-7), 7-6 (7-3), 13-11 in the sixth spot.
Amherst men's tennis will return to action September 28th-30th as they travel to the ITA New England Regional Championships at Middlebury College.
