Amherst Gets 2nd Straight Home Win, Beats MIT 6-3

AMHERST, Mass. -- The No. 7 Amherst College men's tennis team won their second home game of the year, defeating No. 25 MIT 6-3 in non-conference action Friday afternoon at Amherst tennis center.

Sean Wei '21 and Jayson Fung '20 defeated Tyler Barr and Alex Cauneac 8-2 at the top doubles spot as Amherst took a 2-1 lead heading into singles play.

Wei also defeated Barr at No. 1 singles (7-5, 7-6 (5)), while Jesse Levitin '19 was the only other double-winner for Amherst on the day. Levitin paired with Oliver Kendall '19 for an 8-4 win at #3 doubles, then held off Albert Go of MIT in three sets at #5 singles (7-5, 5-7, 6-2).

The Engineers picked up singles points at #3 and #4. Victor Cheng was a straight set winner over Zach Bessette '19 (6-4, 6-2), and Sean Ko took care of Fung 6-1, 6-0.

Kevin Ma '21 topped Cauneac in three sets at #2 singles, and Jon Heidenberg '19 was a 6-3, 6-3 winner over Michael Zhao at #6. 

Go and Zhao earned the doubles point for the Engineers with an 8-6 win over Ma and Bessette at #2.

MIT falls to 5-5 on the season, and will travel to Coast Guard Academiy tomorrow for a 1:00 pm match.

Amherst (9-2) has a meaty test ahead of them next Friday with a home match against #1 ranked Emory (3:00 pm).
