No. 6 Men's Tennis Suffers Its First Loss of the Season to No. 3 CMS, 9-0

CLAREMONT, Calif. – The Mammoths suffered their first of the year Saturday afternoon as the No. 6 Amherst College men's tennis team fell to No. 3 Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 9-0 at the Biszantz Family Tennis Center.

With the setback, Amherst falls to 4-1 on the season, while CMS improves to 13-2 overall. The Mammoths return to action on Saturday, March 31 when they face off against Case Western Reserve in Swarthmore, Pa. beginning at 2 p.m. 

Jayson Fung '20 and Ethan Hillis '21 had the closest matchup in doubles play, battling Oscar Burney and Jack Katzman to an 8-2 loss on the second court. Duo Nathan Kaplan '20 and Sean Wei '21 were edged in the first position, 8-4 while Kevin Ma '21 and Zach Bessette '19 fell in the No. 3 spot, 8-2.

In singles action, Wei was edged on the first court in a hard fought battle, 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, by Nikolai Parodi, while Hillis fell 6-1, 6-2 to Katzman in the second position. In the No. 3 slot, Kaplan was downed by Burney, 6-1, 6-3, while Ma lost in back-to-back 6-4 sets. On the fifth court, Fung was beat 6-3, 6-4 while Jesse Levitin '19 was edged by Avinash Vemuri, 6-4, 7-6 in the sixth position.
