CLAREMONT, Calif. – A strong singles showing by the Mammoths that featured four victories propelled the No. 6 Amherst College men's tennis team past No. 9 Washington University in St. Louis, 6-3 Thursday afternoon.
With the win, Amherst improves to 4-0 on the season, while WUSTL falls to 6-5 overall. Amherst returns to action on Saturday, March 17 when they close out their Spring Break trip with a 2 p.m. matchup against No. 3 CMS.
The Mammoths opened up competition with doubles victories on the first and third courts to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. In the first position, Sean Wei '21 and Nathan Kaplan '20 teamed up to down Konrad Kozlowski and Daniel Li, 8-3, while Zach Bessette '19 and Kevin Ma '21 added an 8-3 win over Jason Haugen and J.J. Kroot in the No. 3 slot.
In singles action, Wei battled past Johnny Wu, 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 6-1 on the first court, before Kaplan notched a hard fought 6-2, 7-5 victory over Kroot in the fourth position.
Ma and Jayson Fung '20 rounded out the Amherst victory, with Ma earning a 6-7 (4-7), 7-5, 6-1 in the No. 5 spot and Fung beating Koki Takabatake, 6-3, 6-3 on the sixth court.
