SKILLMAN, N.J. – Zach Bessette '19 and Jayson Fung '20 of the Amherst College men's tennis team have been named to the 2017 Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) All-America Team for their doubles play, as announced by the organization Thursday.
The ITA recognized 24 singles players and 40 doubles players (20 pairs) with All-America honors.To earn ITA All-America distinction, a student-athlete must be a top-four seed in the NCAA doubles tournament, win one round at the NCAA doubles tournament, finish inside the top-10 in the final Oracle/ITA rankings, win the USTA/ITA fall regional tournament or win a first round match at the USTA/ITA National Small College Championships.
Previously named First Team All-NESCAC, Bessette and Fung closed out 2017 with a 12-6 overall record in doubles action while playing exclusively from the first court for the No. 8 Mammoths. Heading into individual NCAA competition, the duo owned a 3-4 record against fellow doubles qualifiers a stood as the fourth overall seed, but fell to a tandem from Trinity Texas in a hard-fought, three set battle in the Round of 16. Bessette and Fung close the season as the third-ranked doubles pair in the nation according to the final ITA DIII rankings (June 1).
