AMHERST, Mass. - The third-ranked Amherst men's tennis team opened its 2013 NCAA Tournament run Friday morning with a 5-0 second round victory over The College of New Jersey. Sweeping doubles play, the Jeffs picked up wins at first and third singles to advance to the round of 16.
Making quick work of their Lion counterparts at third doubles, Amherst's Joey Fritz '14 and Justin Reindel '14 cruised to an 8-1 win over Jordan Cruz '13 and Pierce Cooper '16. The Jeffs' Mark Kahan '13 and Michael Solimano '16 followed suit with an 8-2 triumph over Marc Nichols '13 and Howard Telson '14 at first doubles to improve to 6-3 on the year.
Edging out the visitor's TJ Riley '13 and Jack August '15, first-years Andrew Yaraghi and Ben Fife completed the doubles sweep with an 8-6 decision. Playing together for much of the fall, the Jeff pairing moved to 10-2 in 2012-13 with the win.
Breezing past August, 6-1, 6-1 at third singles, Yaraghi gave the Jeffs a commanding 4-0 lead, while extending his win streak to seven. Having last lost on Apr. 6 to Bates' Timmy Berg, the first-year is now 19-4 on the season. Putting the finishing touches on Amherst's shutout, Fritz picked up identical 6-3 wins over Nichols at first singles.
Kahan led Riley 6-2, 5-1 in the second slot, while Fife had control of his fourth singles match with Telson, 6-4, 2-1. Chris Dale '14 was also ahead at No. 5 against Cooper, 6-4, 3-2, while Reindel was on his way to a sixth singles win over Cruz, up 6-3, 5-0.
Amherst (28-8), will meet Stevens in third round action on Saturday, May 11, while TCNJ closes out the year with a 15-2 record. In the event of inclement weather, tomorrow's match will be contested at Grande Meadows Tennis Club in Longmeadow, Mass.
