Jeffs Get Past Nichols in NCAA Tournament

AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team kicked off its NCAA Division III Championship run with a 5-0 win over Nichols College on Saturday in the second round of the national tournament.

The Lord Jeffs (30-2) bumped their win streak to 15 matches and will host Vassar College tomorrow at 9 a.m. with a spot in the NCAA quarterfinals on the line. The Bison closed their season at 18-4, having set several program records after winning the first NCAA Championship event in any sport in school history on Friday.

Sunday's showdown in the regional finals will be a rematch of the Apr. 14 meeting in which the Lord Jeffs handed Vassar an 8-1 loss in Amherst. The Jeffs are the defending national champions and are attempting to make a fourth consecutive appearance in the NCAA title match.

Amherst quickly took a 1-0 lead when its top doubles pair of Austin Chafetz '12 and Luis Rattenhuber '12 posted an 8-0 victory against Steve Carella and Brandon Roode. Joey Fritz '14 and Wes Waterman '12 followed with an 8-3 win at number three, getting past the Nichols duo of Justin Deluca and Isiah Prosper for their first loss of the season.

The Jeffs completed the doubles sweep by coming out on the winning end of a hard-fought battle in the second matchup, as Andrew Jung '12 and Mark Kahan '13 defeated David Drucker and Arsen Gasparayan by a score of 8-4.

Chafetz was just as dominant in singles action as he was in the doubles session, posting a pair of 6-0 results against Drucker in the second flight. Waterman closed things out with Amherst at number six, cruising to a 6-0 first-set win over Carella before taking the second set, 6-3.

Sunday's regional final was originally scheduled to begin at noon in Amherst, but the match has been moved up to 9 a.m. due to the expectation of afternoon rain. For more information, visit the Amherst Regional Championship website.
