Seniors Lead Jeffs Past Wesleyan, 9-0

AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team turned to its eight seniors on the final day of the regular season, and the Class of 2012 responded by leading the Lord Jeffs to a 9-0 win over Wesleyan University.

Amherst (27-2, 8-0 NESCAC) increased its winning streak to 12 matches and will receive the top seed in the upcoming NESCAC Championship. The Lord Jeffs will begin their conference title defense next Saturday, when they travel to Williams College to face an opponent yet to be determined.

Each of Amherst's eight seniors recorded a point on Sunday, beginning with Luis Rattenhuber '12 and Julian Camacho '12 posting an 8-1 win in the third doubles match. Robby Sorrel '12 and Austin Chafetz '12 followed with an 8-1 result at number two, moving Chafetz to 14-0 in doubles action this season.

Andrew Jung '12 teamed up with Mark Kahan '13 in the top match, which proved to be the closest doubles showdown of the afternoon. The Lord Jeffs held a narrow 6-4 lead and finished strong, taking the next two points for the 8-4 final.

Wes Waterman '12 was impressive at the top of the singles lineup, as he dropped only one game to Jeff Legunn (6-1, 6-0). Sam Sperling '12 earned a 6-3 win in his first set at number five before edging Alex Rachlin in a tiebreaker, 7-6 (7-4).

Morrison won his first set by a score of 6-2, but Troyer came back for a 7-6 (7-5) victory in the second set.
