Jeffs Post Wins Against Tufts, #22 Skidmore

AMHERST, Mass. - The top-ranked Amherst men's tennis team (23-2, 4-0 NESCAC) extended its win streak to eight with a pair of 7-2 victories over NESCAC rival Tufts University and #22 Skidmore College.

Hoping to get the Jeffs off to a good start against the Jumbos, Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, Conn.) and Chris Dale '14 (Austin, Texas) downed Andrew Lutz '13 and Matt Pataro '14, 8-5, in the top slot, while Robby Sorrel '12 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) secured an 8-4 win over Ben Barad '13 and Brian Tan '15.

Andrew Scheiner '15 (New York, N.Y.) and Jon Cypers '15 (Chappaqua, N.Y.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-4 triumph over Morrie Bossen '12 and Mark Westerfield '13, while Joey Fritz '14 (Cincinnati, Ohio) headlined singles action with a 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 victory over Barad.

Austin Blau '14 notched one of two Jumbos points with a 6-4, 2-6, 6-1 win over Eli Mlaver '14 (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) at second singles, while Cypers took two straight from senior Sam Laber, 6-4, 6-0.

Pataro recorded Tufts' other point with a 4-6, 6-2, 6-1 come-from-behind win over Julian Camacho '12 (New York, N.Y.), while Surain Asokaraj '12 (Acton, Mass.) defeated sophomore Zach Ladwig, 6-2, 6-2 in the fifth spot. Scheiner rounded out the lineup with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-1 victory over Tan.

Looking to keep things rolling for Amherst in their afternoon session with #22 Skidmore, Luis Rattenhuber '13 (Munich, Germany) and Austin Chafetz '12 (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) handed Jimmy Sherpa '14 and Alex Hoblitzell '15 an 8-6 loss, while Kahan and Dale turned away sophomores Oliver Loutsenko and Danny Knight, 8-6.

Sorrel and Waterman came away from their third doubles matchup with Max Bevan '12 and Luke Granger '12 with an 8-3 win, while Rattenhuber defeated Loutsenko 6-3, 4-6, 10-5 at the top of the singles order.

Andrew Jung '12 (Battle Creek, Mich.) swept Granger 6-0, 6-0, while Miles Ransom '15 earned a point for the Thoroughbreds with a 6-3, 1-6, 10-8 third singles win over Waterman. Dale made quick work of his fourth singles match with Hoblitzell, 6-0, 6-2, while Knight outlasted Justin Reindel '14 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.), 6-4, 2-6, 12-10. Cypers held his own at the bottom of the Jeff lineup with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Gabe Steerman '14.

Amherst returns to action on Apr. 21 at #24 Trinity.
