Jeffs Move to 21-2 with Pair of 8-1 Wins

AMHERST, Mass. – The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team improved to 21-2 overall and 3-0 in the NESCAC with 8-1 victories over Colby and Vassar on Saturday. The Lord Jeffs will wrap up a busy weekend by hosting Tufts and Skidmore tomorrow.

The Lord Jeffs began their day against Colby and would carry a 2-1 lead into singles play. First-years Andrew Scheiner and Jon Cypers cruised to an 8-1 win in the third doubles match, while seniors Robby Sorrel and Austin Chafetz came away with an 8-5 victory at number two. The Mules got one back in the top spot, as Tom Kimball and Jason Ottomano knocked off juniors Mark Kahan and Luis Rattenhuber, 8-6.

Amherst sophomores Joey Fritz and Chris Dale won the top two singles matches in straight sets, as did senior Julian Camacho at number four. The other matches would require three sets, beginning with Eli Mlaver '14 defeating Jack Bryant at number three (6-4, 3-6, 6-1). Surain Asokaraj '12 came back to win the fifth matchup against Matthew Mantikas (4-6, 6-4, 6-2), while Justin Hendrix '14 took care of Than Moore at number six (6-4, 5-7, 10-5).

The Jeffs changed up their doubles pairs in the afternoon match against Vassar, this time carrying a 3-0 lead into singles action. Rattenhuber and Chafetz gave Amherst an 8-4 win at number one, with Wes Waterman '12 and Sorrel matching that score at number two. Scheiner and Cypers once again teamed up in the third slot and picked up their second victory of the day, 8-6.

Vassar got its lone point when Andrew Guzick closed out the afternoon with a 7-6(6), 7-6(5) win over Fritz in the top singles match. Amherst would take the other five in straight sets, with Waterman (6-0, 6-2) and Cypers (6-3, 6-0) picking up convincing wins at three and six, respectively. Andrew Jung '12 earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory in the number two matchup, while Dale won at number four and Reindel took both of his sets by a 6-2 score in the fifth slot.
