Men's Tennis Downs #14 Bowdoin, 7-2

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst men's tennis team continued its strong showing while on its Spring Break trip to California, downing #14 Bowdoin (7-2), Cerritos (9-0) and Chapman (9-0) to improve to 8-0 on the year.

Amherst's Luis Rattenhuber '13 (Munich, Germany) and Andrew Jung '12 (Battle Creek, Mich.) outlasted Oscar Pena '12 and Sam King '14, 9-7, at first doubles, while the Polar Bears' Kyle Wolstencraft '15 and Doug Caplan '15 handed Joey Fritz '14 (Cincinnati, Ohio) and Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) an 8-5 loss. Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, Conn.) and Jon Cypers '15 (Chappaqua, N.Y.) rounded out doubles action with a hard-fought 9-8 (4) victory over Kent Winingham '12 and Noah Bragg '15.

Kahan headlined the singles lineup with a 6-2, 7-6 (4) triumph over King in the top slot, while Rattenhuber defeated Pena, 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Fritz turned away Chris Lord '14, 6-3, 6-4 at third singles, while Casey Grindon '13 bested Wes Waterman, 6-1, 6-0 for Bowdoin's only other point.

At the bottom of the order, Jung secured a 6-4, 6-2 win over Bragg, while Cypers earned a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 victory over Wolstencraft.

The Lord Jeffs' Austin Chafetz '12 (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Robby Sorrel '12 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) made quick work of Dylan Tevlin '13 and Alex Klein '12, scoring an 8-2 win at first doubles, while Chris Dale '14 (Austin, Texas) and Andrew Scheiner '15 (New York, N.Y.) earned an 8-3 victory over Justin Thompson '14 and Chris Williams '14.

Surain Asokaraj '12 (Acton, Mass.) and Eli Mlaver '14 (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) completed Amherst's doubles sweep, with a hard-fought 9-8 (7) triumph over Andre Herd '14 and Kevin Smyth '14.

Chafetz led off singles action with a 6-0, 6-7 (4), 6-3 win over Thompson, while Mlaver rallied from a first set loss to take the next two frames from Tevlin, 6-0, 6-2. Also trailing after the first set, Scheiner staged a rally of his own, eventually notching a 2-6, 6-1, 7-5 victory over Herd at third singles, while Asokaraj handed Klein a 7-5, 6-3 loss.

Sorrel held his own at fifth singles, defeating Kyle Coates '15, 6-1, 7-6 (1), while Brenton Arnaboldi '14 (New York, N.Y.) closed out the order with a 5-7, 6-3, 10-6 win over Sam Farzani '15.
