Men's Tennis Opens Season in California

AMHERST, Mass. – The Amherst men's tennis team opened its 2012 spring season with wins over Cal Tech (9-0), Vanguard (6-3) and San Diego City College (9-0) to improve to 6-0 on the year.

Amherst's Robby Sorrel '12 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Chris Dale '14 (Austin, Texas) scored an 8-1 victory over Devashish Joshi '14 and Luka Mernik '14 at first doubles, while Sam Sperling '12 (Chicago, Ill.) and Justin Hendrix '14 (Surrey, United Kingdom), defeated Alex Runkel '13 and Anish Agarwal '13, 8-4, in the second slot. Surain Asokaraj '12 (Acton, Mass.) and Dan Keolasy '13 (Fullerton, Calif.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-1 triumph over Amol Kamat '13 and Fred Zhao '12.

In singles action, Asokaraj defeated Joshi 6-3, 6-1 at the top of the lineup, while Sperling handed Mernik a 6-4, 6-2 loss. Keolasy bested Runkel 6-2, 6-0 in the third slot, while Chris Morrison '12 (Falmouth, Maine) turned down sophomore Jeff Shen, 6-2, 6-3.

Andrew Kurzweil '15 (Newport Coast, Calif.) kept things rolling for the Jeffs at fifth singles with a 6-1, 6-0 victory over Zhao, while Karan Bains '14 (Hudson, Ohio) earned a 6-1, 6-1 win over Kamat at the bottom of the order.

Amherst's Luis Rattenhuber '13 (Munich, Germany) and Andrew Jung '12 (Battle Creek, Mich.) headlined doubles action with an 8-4 triumph over Roger Muri '15 and Yahor Kryvaruchka '13, while Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) and Joey Fritz '14 (Cincinnati, Ohio) outlasted Lucas Periera '12 and Radek Rosiak '14, 8-6. Robin Wagner '13 and Lukas Larsson '13 recorded the Lions' first point of the day with an 8-6 triumph of their own at third doubles over Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, Conn.) and Jon Cypers '15 (Chappaqua, N.Y.).

Kahan rebounded in singles play, rallying from a 6-3 first set loss to Pereira in the top slot with a pair of 6-3 triumphs the next two frames, while Fritz also came back from a first set loss, downing Muri, 2-6, 6-0, 6-4.

Waterman got the best of Kryvaruchka in the third spot, 6-2, 6-4, while Wagner defeated Cypers, 6-3, 6-0. Mlaver edged out Larsson 7-6 (3), 6-3, while Rosiak notched Vanguard's only other score with a 6-4, 5-7, 10-5 win over Rodriguez.

Amherst's Austin Chafetz '12 (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Andrew Scheiner '15 (New York, N.Y.) notched an 8-2 win over Rafa Martinez '15 and He'Bert Sherrod '15 at first doubles, while Julian Camacho '12 (New York, N.Y.) and Justin Reindel '14 (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) handed Jorge Benitez '14 and Paul Quinones '14 an 8-0 loss. Matt Lerner '13 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Kade Pettie '15 (Delmar, N.Y.) rounded out doubles play with an 8-2 victory over Jose Torres '15 and Jesus Torres '15.

Chafetz kicked off singles action with a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Martinez in the top slot, while Camacho scored a decisive 6-1, 6-0 win over Sherrod. Scheiner upended Benitez by scores of 6-1, 6-0 in the third spot, while Sam Ubersax '15 (Pepper Pike, Ohio) defeated Quinones, 6-0, 6-1.

Brenton Arnaboldi '14 (New York, N.Y.) swept Jose Torres, 6-0, 6-0 at fifth singles, while Lerner took down Jesus Torres in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0.
