Men's Tennis Outlasts #15 Bates, 5-4

LEWISTON, Maine - The top-ranked Amherst College men's tennis team improved to 19-2 on the season with a hard-fought 5-4 win over #15 Bates, snapping the Bobcats' five-game win streak.

Austin Chafetz '12 (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) and Luis Rattenhuber '13 (Munich, Germany) got Amherst off to a fast start with an 8-3 first doubles win over Bates' Matt Bettles '13 and Rob Crampton '13, but the Bobcats pulled out two tough matches at second and third doubles to take a 2-1 lead.

Timmy Berg '14 and Pierre Planche '15 defeated Mark Kahan '13 (Unionville, Conn.) and Chris Dale '14 (Austin, Texas) in a second doubles tiebreaker, 9-8 (7-5), while Robby Sorrel '12 (Scarsdale, N.Y.) and Wes Waterman '12 (Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.) fell to Kyle DeSisto '13 and Peter Yanofsky '14, 9-7.

Chafetz headlined singles action with a 6-2, 7-6 (7) victory over Berg, while Rattenhuber outlasted Bettles, 7-6 (2), 5-7, 6-4. Crampton handed Joey Fritz '14 (Cincinnati, Ohio) a 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 loss in the third slot, while Andrew Jung '12 (Battle Creek, Mich.) scored a 6-1, 6-2 triumph over Jeff Beaton '12.

Planche defeated Waterman 6-1, 7-5 at fifth singles, while Dale held his own at the bottom of the order, turning away DeSisto, 6-2, 6-4.

Amherst returns to action on Saturday, Apr. 14 when it plays host to Colby and Vassar.
